memoirs ~ 2019

about memoirs

The project memoirs was seeded when myself and Elisa Nader - my good friend/ visual artist/designer

/gardener - discovered we both had memoirs from our grandparents.

we spent one month in residency at lake studios berlin exploring

these texts together in the form of music, dance and objects. memoirs is a personal research project exploring identity and stories of migration, we're not sure if it will ever take the form of a 'show' as such.

WE COLLABORATED WITH JAZZ SAXOPHINIST CHRIStopher WILLIAMS, WHO CONTRIBUTED in PART to THE PROJECT, AS A MUSICIAN.

my memoir is in the form of the autobiography of my great-grandmother who began life in Zhitomir, russia in 1900. she was living during a time of violence & survived the pogroms, moving between russia, palestine and berlin before settling in the uk with one of her siblings.

it was interesting for me to explore her world whilst I was living in berlin ~ it was here she had enjoyed life in her twenties as a student.

i've been interested in the migration story, my own story and what a migratory body might mean for me ~ if bodies can keep migrating without moving and how a history of migration and cultural displacement develops and transforms.
